Metal-bound water mols. have recently been recognized as a new facet of soft Lewis acid catalysis. Herein, a chiral palladium aqua complex was constructed that enables carbon-hydrogen bonds of indoles to be functionalized efficiently. We embraced a chiral 2,2′-bipyridine as both ligand and hydrogen-bond donor to configure a robust, yet highly Lewis acidic, chiral aqua complex in water. Whereas the enantioselectivity could not be controlled in organic solvents or under solvent-free conditions, the use of aqueous environments allowed the σ-indolylpalladium intermediates to react efficiently in a highly enantioselective manner. This work thus describes a potentially powerful new approach to the transformation of organometallic intermediates in a highly enantioselective manner under mild reaction conditions.

Mechanistic studies suggest that, unlike traditional (η3-allyl)palladium-mediated processes, the reaction proceeds via an alkoxy-palladium intermediate that increases the proton acidity and oxygen nucleophilicity of the alc. The method is exemplified with the synthesis of a range of glycosides and glycoconjugates of synthetic utility.

C-H arylation via a Pd(II)/Pd(IV) catalytic cycle has been one of the most extensively studied C-H activation reactions since the 1990s. Despite the rapid development of this reaction in the past two decades, an enantioselective version has not been reported to date. Herein, we report a Pd(II)-catalyzed highly enantioselective (up to 99.5% ee) arylation of cyclopropyl C-H bonds with aryl iodides using mono-N-protected amino acid (MPAA) ligands, providing a new route for the preparation of chiral cis-aryl-cyclopropylmethylamines, e.g., I [R1 = H, Me, CH2Ph, Ph, C6H3F2-2,6, CH2OSiMe2CMe3, CO2Me]. The enantiocontrol is also shown to override the diastereoselectivity of chiral substrates.

The structures of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzyl Me ether (I) and bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)benzyl Me ether)palladium(II)triflate (II) were determined by x-ray crystallog. II is a potential catalyst in organic synthesis and was prepared by treating tetrakis(acetonitrile)palladium bistriflate with 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzyl Me ether in toluene for 16 h at room temperature I crystallizes in monoclinic space group P21/a with a 7.873(2), b 14.805(3), c 14.262(5) Å, β 91.34(3)°, and Z = 4. II crystallizes in triclinic space group P1̅ with a 10.2886(6), b 13.951(1), c 15.6339(9) Å, α 89.171(5), β 73.791(5), γ 83.463(6)°, and Z = 2. Both structures were solved by direct methods and the refinements resulted in the R-values 0.066 and 0.052 for I and II, resp. The bidentate ligand binds to Pd(II) in a cis-configuration. The Pd-O distances are 2.153(3) and 2.142(3) A and the Pd-P distances 2.252(1) and 2.256(1) Å. The effects of packing and metal complexation on the geometry of I are discussed and the differences are compared by half-normal probability plot anal.

Reductive carbonylation of nitrobenzene in methanol in the presence of a palladium catalyst yields mainly Me N-phenylcarbamate. Diphenylurea is formed as the most important byproduct. A series of 4,4′-disubstituted-2,2′-bipyridyl ligands (R = F3C, Cl, H, Me, MeO, and Me2N) has been used to study the influence of the donating capacity of the ligand on the catalytic activity and selectivity. By way of two different types of complexes, Pd(ligand)2(OTf)2 and Pd(ligand)Cl(OTf), the influence of the anions in the catalytic system has also been studied. Electron-withdrawing substituents on the bipyridyl ligand turned out to completely deactivate the catalyst, while few differences were found between the ligands with electron-donating substituents. Chloride anions showed an inhibiting effect. The presence of water reduced the selectivity toward carbamate. At prolonged reaction times the urea side product was catalytically converted into the desired carbamate. Under more severe conditions carbamates, urea side products, and anilines were found with methoxy substituents on their Ph rings. X-ray structures were elucidated for Pd(bpy)2(OTf)2 and Pd(Mebpy)2(OTf)2. The Pd(bpy)2(OTf)2 crystals were monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 8.0186(8) Å, b = 28.459(4) Å, c = 11.315(3) Å, β = 97.59(3)°, Z = 8, and final R = 0.046 for 3194 observed reflections. The Pd(Me-bpy)2(OTf)2 crystals were triclinic, space group P1, a = 11.726(6) Å, b = 11.870(3) Å, c = 13.871(2) Å, α = 103.63(6)°, β = 107.78(2)°, γ = 113.32(3)°, Z = 2, and final R = 0.147 for 5462 observed reflections. The CF3SO3 moieties were not stable during refinement.

[(Neocuproine)Pd(OAc)]2[OTf]2 (1) catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of 2-heptanol at room temperature, but competitive ligand oxidation leads to low catalyst lifetimes. In an effort to mitigate the oxidative degradation of the ligand, a variety of Pd complexes ligated by fluorinated phenanthrolines (bis-2,9-(trifluoromethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (btfm-phen), 4-methyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (tfmm-phen), and 2-(o-difluorophenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (odfp-phen)) were prepared and tested. Active catalyst precursors were generated by in situ conproportionation of (N-N)Pd(OAc)2 and [(N-N)Pd(NCCH3)2[OTf]2]. Pd complexes derived from tfmm-phen catalyzed the aerobic oxidation of 2-heptanol at room temperature with up to 22 turnovers, nearly double that of 1.
