Propylene carbonate-nitrile solvent blends for thermally stable gel polymer lithium ion battery electrolytes

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) based on poly (vinylidene difluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) containing propylene carbonate (PC), isobutyronitrile (IBN) and trimethyl acetonitrile (TMAN) solvent blend electrolytes were developed to enhance high temperature electrochemical performance and to improve safety of LiNi3/5Mn1/5Co1/5O2 (NMC622)parallel to graphite lithium ion battery (LIB) cells. These liquid electrolytes (LE) consist of lithium bis(trifluoro-methane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) as conducting lithium salt and PC/nitrile (1:1, v/v) solvent blends. Ethylene sulfite (ES) and vinylene carbonate (VC) were used as solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forming additives and contributing to an excellent cycling stability of electrolytes comprising nitrile solvents in NMC622 parallel to graphite cells. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (PFG NMR) and relative permittivity determination reveal remarkable ion conducting properties of IBN and TMAN solvents. Since their electrolytes are incompatible with lithium metal electrodes, their electrochemical stability window (ESW) was determined using lithiated lithium titanate (Li7Ti5O12) (LTO) as counter and reference electrodes and the obtained values were confirmed by quantum mechanical compu-tation. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) confirmed significantly improved safety of IBN and TMAN containing electrolytes. Therefore, PVdF-HFP-based GPEs containing PC/nitrile solvent blends are a promising alternative to SOTA electrolyte for battery cycling at elevated temperature (60 degrees C) in NMC622 parallel to graphite cells.

Co-pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge and red wood waste in a continuously operated auger reactor under microwave irradiation

The eco-friendly disposal of textile dyeing sludge (TDS) has become a worldwide environmental issue due to their complexity and toxicity. In this study, co-pyrolysis of TDS and red wood waste (RWW) in a continuously operated auger reactor under microwave irradiation was investigated, which was more environmentally friendly and created higher value added products. Effects of pyrolysis temperature and RWW ratio were studied to evaluate product distribution and properties. Increase of temperature and RWW ratio resulted in decrease in char yield and increase in gas yield. The contents of CO, CH4, and H-2 increased significantly with RWW ratio increased at 650 degrees C. The content of pyridines, amines, and nitriles enhanced sharply with increasing temperature from 450 to 750 degrees C. Co-pyrolysis promoted the Maillard reaction and cracking of nitrogen-containing pigments, forming large quantities of N-heterocyclics in bio-oil. Sludge char obtained by pyrolysis of TDS at 650 degrees C had a greater sulfur retention ability than chars from co-pyrolysis. The highest methylene blue number (372.25 mg/g) and iodine adsorption value (332.42 mg/g) were achieved from TDS and biochar (750 degrees C, 30 wt% RWW ratio), respectively. Strengthening effect of mullins effect under tearing mode and its reversibility for zinc dimethacrylate-reinforced thermoplastic vulcanizates based on ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer/nitrile-butadiene rubber blends

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer (EAA)/nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) reinforced EAA/NBR blends were prepared by dynamical vulcanization, the mechanical properties and Mullins effect of the TPVs under tearing mode were investigated systematically. Experimental results indicated that the increasing EAA dosage in the EAA/NBR TPVs and the incorporation of ZDMA in NBR phase of TPVs could all lead to the increase of tear strength. The Mullins effect of EAA/NBR and EAA/NBR/ZDMA TPVs could be observed obviously under tearing mode, while it was hardly to obverse in that of static NBR vulcanizate during the cyclic deformation.

Blooming-forming cyanobacteria pyrolysis over Ni-Al layered double oxides/MCM-41 for nitriles under nitrogen and methanol atmosphere

Blooming-forming cyanobacteria were catalytically pyrolyzed over Ni-Al layered double oxides/MCM-41 (NiAl-LDO/MCM-41) composites with nitrogen or methanol as sweep gas for the production of nitrogenous compounds. The effect of catalysts and gas atmosphere on the product distribution and the formation of nitrogenous compounds was investigated. The results showed that the amount of nitrogenous compounds increased with the increase of catalyst/cyanobacteria ratio; liquid yields of about 50% were obtained over NiAl-LDO/MCM-41 under both nitrogen and methanol atmosphere. However, composites of the hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds in bio-oil under methanol atmosphere were lower than those under nitrogen atmosphere. Nitrogenous compound content of 78.6%, especially a 68.5% content of nitriles with low oxygen content and acidity, demonstrated that the bio-oil obtained was promising in producing value-added platform chemicals.

Hydrothermal alkaline conversion of actual acrylonitrile wastewater to organic acids

Acrylonitrile wastewater is a kind of highly toxic industrial wastewater, but it contains a lot of valuable chemical materials. In this study, by using the most promising hydrothermal technology, we investigated the best reaction conditions and possible reaction pathways for the conversion of the three nitrites (acrylonitrile, acetonitrile, and succinonitrile) to organic acids under alkaline hydrothermal conditions. Then, the reaction conditions for the conversion of actual acrylonitrile wastewater to organic acids were further optimized. The actual wastewater of acrylonitrile was converted into 1.33 x 10(4) mg/L acrylic acid, 1.98 x 10(4) mg/L formic acid and 9.40 x 10(3) mg/L acetic acid at optimal reaction conditions (reaction temperature 300 degrees C, reaction time 90 s, and initial NaOH concentration 1.0 mol/L). It is the theoretical basis of the application of the hydrothermal alkali-catalyzed method in the acrylonitrile wastewater resource engineering. Utilization of Leather Waste Fibers in Polymer Matrix Composites Based on Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Rubber

In this study, we present the fabrication of nitrile butadiene rubber/waste leather fiber (NBR/WLF) composites with different weight percentages of WLF and NBR (0/100, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50, 60/40 wt/wt). WLF was prepared by cutting the scrap leathers from the waste product of the Vietnamese leather industry. Subsequently, in order to make the short fibers, it was mixed by a hammer mill. The characteristics of WLF/NBR composites such as mechanical properties (tensile strength, tear strength, hardness), dynamic mechanical properties, toluene absorption, and morphology were carefully evaluated. As a result, the tensile strength and tear strength become larger with increasing WLF content from 0 to 50 wt% and they decrease when further increasing WLF content. The highest tensile strength of 12.5 MPa and tear strength of 72.47 N/mm were achieved with the WLF/NBR ratio of 50/50 wt%. Both hardness and resistance of the developed materials with toluene increased with increasing WLF content. The SEM results showed a good adhesion of NBR matrix and the WLF. The increasing of storage modulus (E’) in comparison with raw NBR showed good compatibility between WLF and NBR matrix. This research showed that the recycled material from waste leather and NBR was successfully prepared and has great potential for manufacturing products such as floor covering courts and playgrounds, etc.

The synthesis and cholinesterase inhibitory activities of solasodine analogues with seven-membered F ring

Solasodine analogues containing a seven-membered F ring with a nitrogen atom placed at position 22a were prepared from diosgenin or tigogenin in a four-step synthesis comprising of the simultaneous opening of the F-ring and introduction of cyanide in position 22 alpha, activation of the 26-hydroxyl group as mesylate, nitrile reduction, and N-cyclization. Solasodine, six obtained 22a(N)-homo analogues, as well as four 26a-homosolasodine derivatives and their open-chain precursors (13 in total) were tested as potential inhibitors of acetyland butyryl-cholinesterases and showed activity at micromolar concentrations. The structure-activity relationship study revealed that activities against studied esterases are affected by the structure of E/F rings and the substitution pattern of ring A. The most potent compound 8 acted as non-competitive inhibitors and exerted IC50 = 8.51 mu M and 7.05 mu M for eeAChE and eqBChE, respectively. Molecular docking studies revealed the hydrogen bond interaction of 8 with S293 of AChE; further rings are stabilized via hydrophobic interaction (ring A) or interaction with Y341 and W286 (rings B and C). Biological experiments showed no neurotoxicity of differentiated SH-SY5Y cells. More importantly, results from neuroprotective assay based on glutamate-induced cytotoxicity revealed that most derivatives had the ability to increase the viability of differentiated SH-SY5Y cells in comparison to galantamine and lipoic acid assayed as standards. The newly synthesized solasodine analogues are able to inhibit and to bind cholinesterases in noncompetitive mode of inhibition and exhibited neuroprotection potential of differentiated neuroblastoma cells after Glu-induced toxicity.

Fatty acid coated iron oxide nanoparticle: Effect on stability, particle size and magnetic properties

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) have been used as a magnetic base for polymeric composites. However, the magnetic properties of IONP are not fully exploited due to the difficulties to obtain a good dispersion and high stablity within the polymeric matrix. The objective of this study is to improve the stability, dispersive ability and separability of IONP by fatty acid coating. Fatty acid coated iron oxide nanoparticle (C-IONP) has been selected due to its hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity characteristics and consequently useful to be incorporated with nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) as a polymeric compound model. The facile precipitation method has been used to synthesize C-IONP with good polydispersity of iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) and high compatibility with polar and non polar medium was addressed. Iron (II) sulphate heptahydrate and ammonium hydroxide were selected as precursors to synthesize IONP at 60 degrees C at 1.5 h aging time and subsequently coated with series of fatty acids (oleic, capric, myristic, palmitic and stearic acids). It is observed that, oleic acid C-IONP has excellent compatibility in water and NBR latex medium, with small hydrodynamic size and narrow particle size distribution. This is due the existence of double bond in oleic acid backbone chain. The magnetization saturation of oleic acid C-IONP was 54.53 emu/g hence it can be incorporated to NBR latex. This therefore demonstrated that, highly magnetic polymeric composite could be produced with good and homogeneously dispersed and stable IONP.

The synthesis of nitrile under mild conditions was achieved via dehydration of primary amide using lead salts as catalyst. The reaction processes were intensified by not only adding surfactant but also continuously removing the only by-product, water from the system. Both aliphatic and aromatic nitriles can be prepared in this manner with moderate to excellent yields.
