Evaluate the quality of finishing and degree of contamination before and after handling and surface treatment of titanium (Ti) orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs). OMIs surface characteristics were as follows: acid-etched (Ra approximate to 1.3 mu m, CA approximate to 66 degrees), machined (Ra approximate to 0.3 mu m, CA approximate to 68 degrees), SB (Ra approximate to 3.3 mu m, CA approximate to 78 degrees), and SBAO (Ra approximate to 3.1 mu m, CA approximate to 92 degrees). Bone was contaminated by OMIs surface defects and extra particles. Manufactured OMIs have surface contaminants that increase with clinical handling. Surface treatments (SBAO, a combination of sandblasting and anodic oxidation) increase the roughness and contact angle, which play an important role in osseointegration. Surface-treated OMIs leave titanium particles in the bone during their insertion-removal. The use of a gauze soaked in chlorhexidine is recommended when handling OMIs. Further investigations would be interesting to study more variables and confirm the present results.

Nonlinear finite element analysis on the sealing performance of rubber packer for hydraulic fracturing

As the core component of a fracturing tool, a rubber packer plays a vital role during the well stimulation process. Its sealing performance significantly affects the fracturing effects. This study adopted a 3D multi-body contact nonlinear finite element analysis with the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive model to investigate the sealing performance of the hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber. The effects of key parameters such as the total thickness, sub-thickness, height, and rubber hardness on the sealing performance were systemically investigated. Numerical results indicated that maximum contact stress appeared around the rubber packer’s upper part because of the combined effect of friction and axial compression. Besides, the numerical results were validated with theoretical and experimental results, in which the error between theoretical and numerical results was less than 7%, and that between the numerical results and experimental results was approximately 17.7%. Under the conditions considered, key parameters of rubber packer were optimized as a total thickness of 20 mm, a sub-thickness of 13 mm, a height of 70 mm, and a hardness of 70 International Rubber Hardness Degrees, in terms of the maximum contact stress and deformation displacement. The proposed numerical approaches could accurately predict rubber packer’s deformation status, which consequently had technical guiding significance for the design of similar sealing components in various applications.

The presence of CH3C3N on Titan was suggested by the Cassini Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer detection of its protonated form: C4H3NH+, but the atmospheric abundance of the associated (deprotonated) neutral product is not well constrained due to the lack of appropriate laboratory reaction data. Here, we derive the column density of CH3C3N to be (3.8-5.7).x.10(12) cm(-2) based on radiative transfer models sensitive to altitudes above 400 km Titan’s middle atmosphere. When compared with laboratory and photochemical model results, the detection of methylcyanoacetylene provides important constraints for the determination of the associated production pathways (such as those involving CN, CCN, and hydrocarbons), and reaction rate coefficients. These results also further demonstrate the importance of ALMA and (sub)millimeter spectroscopy for future investigations of Titan’s organic inventory and atmospheric chemistry, as CH3C3N marks the heaviest polar molecule detected spectroscopically in Titan’s atmosphere to date.
