The synthesis of some 3,5-disubstituted 1,2,4-oxadiazoles starting from arylnitriles is described. Arylnitriles are converted to arylamidoximes and then condensed with aromatic acid chlorides to form 1,2,4-oxadiazoles. Structures of the products were characterized by anal. data and spectral studies. All compounds of the series were screened for their anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity. Most of the tested compounds showed moderate antifungal and antibacterial activity comparable with that of the standard drug.
