This hole-conducting co-adsorbent (HC-A) has multiple functions: a light-harvesting function as a short-wavelength light absorption dye mol. to increase Jsc, a prevention effect of π-π stacking of organic dye to enhance Voc by decreasing charge recombination, and a hole-conducting function, evidenced by EIS and transient absorption spectra for the formation of carbazole cation radical species, to enhance Voc and Jsc. As a result, a DSSC with the HC-A had improved efficiency by a factor of 1.33, compared to a similar solar cell without the HC-A. The photovoltaic performance of this DSSC exhibited a remarkably high Jsc of 17.25 mA/cm2, a Voc of 688 mV, a FF of 74.93% and a conversion efficiency of 8.89 % at 100 mW/cm2. This is the best result reported for a DSSC employing the organic dye NKX2677. The detailed kinetics for a cascade-type hole-hopping process proposed here is complicated and constitutes another topic for research.

Stable carbazole derivatives that contain peripheral diarylamines at the 3- and 6-positions and an Et or aryl substituent at the 9-position of the carbazole moiety have been synthesized via palladium-catalyzed C-N bond formation. These new carbazole compounds (carbs) are amorphous with high glass transition temperatures (Tg, 120-194 °C) and high thermal decomposition temperatures (Td > 450 °C). The compounds are weakly to moderately luminescent in nature. The emission wavelength ranges from green to blue and is dependent on the substituent at the peripheral nitrogen atoms. Two types of light-emitting diodes were constructed from carb: (I) ITO/carb/TPBI/Mg:Ag and (II) ITO/carb/Alq3/Mg:Ag, where TPBI and Alq3 are 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene and tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum, resp. In type I devices, the carb functions as the hole-transporting as well as emitting material. In type II devices, either carb, or Alq3 is the light-emitting material. Several green light-emitting devices exhibit exceptional maximum brightness, and the phys. performance appears to be better than those of typical green light-emitting devices of the structure ITO/diamine/Alq3/Mg:Ag. The relation between the LUMO of the carb and the performance of the light-emitting diode is discussed.

Three soluble D-A type polycarbazole derivatives with different electron acceptors in the side chain, including poly[(9-(2-hexyldecyl)-9H-carbazole)-(9-(4-nitrophenyl)-9H-carbazole)] (PCz-NO2), poly[(9-(2-hexyldecyl)-9H-carbazole)-(4-(9H-carbazole-9-yl)benzaldehyde)] (PCz-CHO), and poly[(9-(2-hexyldecyl)-9H-carbazole)-(4-(9H-carbazole-9-yl)benzonitrile)] (PCz-CN), were synthesized through the Suzuki coupling reaction. These polymers-based electronic devices with a configuration of Al (200 nm)/polymer (90 nm)/Indium-Tin Oxide (ITO) had representative bistable elec. switching behavior and non-volatile write-once read-many-times (WORM) memory performance. When the optical bandgap of conjugated polymer was increased (2.26 Ev (PCz-NO2)→2.79 eV(PCz-CHO)→3.20 eV(PCz-CN)), the threshold voltage of the corresponding electronic device gradually increased (-1.70 V→-1.81 V→-1.89 V), whereas the ON/OFF current ratio was changed from 6.63 × 104 for PCz-NO2 to 4.08 × 104 for PCz-CHO and to 5. 68 × 103 for PCz-CN. Among these three derivatives, PCz-CN exhibited the biggest turn-on voltage and the lowest ON/OFF current ratio.
