An efficient [3+3] benzannulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates with 1-indanylidenemalononitrile was achieved under metal-free reaction conditions selectively delivering a wide range of functional multi-substituted fluorene I (R1 = H, 7-F, 6-Me, 6-OMe; R2 = H, 4-F, 3-Br, etc.) or fluorenone compounds II in high yields, resp.
