To a stirred solution of 3-oxopentanenitrile (XXXV; 2g; 21 mmol) in ethanol (60 mL) was added hydrazine hydrate (1.3 mL; 41 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to a reflux for12 hours. The crude mixture was purified by column chromatography using 8% MeOH-DCM to obtain 5-ethyl-1H- pyrazol-3-amine as a brown sticky solid (XXXVI; 1.8 g; 78% yield). ?H NMR (400 MHz,DMSO-d6): oe 11.0 (bs, 1H), 5.17 (s, 1H), 4.5 (bs, 2H), 2.4 (m, 2H), 1.1 (m, 3H). MS (M+1):111.93.
