Treatment of I (R1 = cyano) with H2SO4 for 2 days gave I (R1 = CONH2) whereas after 7 days the indoles II were obtained. I (R1 = CONH2) have bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (no data).
