Treatment of aromatic nitriles ArCN (Ar = 4-Me, 3-Me, 2-Me, 4-t-Bu, 4-Cl, 3,5-dichloro, 2-naphthyl, etc.) with 3-arylpropylmagnesium bromides (Ar'(CH2)3MgBr = H, Me, Cl) under warming conditions and then with water, followed by the reaction with DIH at room temperature under irradiation with a LED lamp and then with tBuOK gave 2,5-diarylpyrroles in moderate yields.
