Strong Broensted acids were found to catalyze the oxidative condensation of 2-aminothiophenols with aryl alkyl ketones in DMSO to provide a wide range of complex 2-arylbenzothiazines I [R = H, Cl; R1 = 4-FC6H4, 4-MeC6H4, 2-thienyl, etc.].
