To 0.2 mmol of 3,4-dihydroxycinnamaldehyde in 3 mL EtOH a corresponding substituted acetonitrile or the like was added followed by addition of 0.4 mmol of piperidine. A dark red solution was stirred at 20 °ree;C for 0.5 h. 0.5 mL 1 N HC1 and 5 mL of H2O were added and EtOH was evaporated with the stream of N2. The precipitated powder was filtered off, washed with H2O and dried in a desiccator in vacuo in the presence of solid NaOH. Yields were 55-70%.
