General procedure: To a mixture of 2,3-diaminomaleonitrile (1 mmol) and corresponding aromatic aldehyde (1 mmol) in H2O (5 mL), cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (5 molpercent) was added and the reaction mixture stirred at room temperature for the desired time, as shown in Table 3.
