To a mixture of 3-chloro-2-fluoro-benzaldehyde (13.7 g, 86.68 mmol, 1.05 eq) and 2- (4-chloro-2-fluoro-phenyl)acetonitrile (14 g, 82.56 mmol, 1 eq) in methanol (200 mL) was added the solution of sodium methoxide (13.4 g, 247.67 mmol, 3 eq) in methanol (40 mL) dropwise at 0 C under nitrogen atmosphere. The solid was filtered and washed with water (200 mL) and methanol (50 mL) and then was dried in vacuum to give (Z)-3-(3-chloro-2-fluoro- phenyl)-2-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-phenyl)prop-2-enenitrile (24 g, 77.39 mmol, 93% yield) as a white solid. 1H-NMR (400MHz, CDCL) d 8.20 – 8.10 (m, 1H), 7.81 (s, 1H), 7.64 – 7.49 (m, 2H), 7.33 – 7.20 (m, 3H).
