Thereafter, the mixture was admixed cautiously with 50 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid and stirred at 70 C. for 1 h. The cooled reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was admixed with ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was removed, washed with saturated sodium hydrogencarbonate solution and then with water, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography using silica gel with 2:1 heptane /ethyl acetate. This afforded 21.2 g (90% yield) of 4-(4,4-dimethyl-2,5-dioxoimidazolidin-1-yl)-2-trifluoromethylbenzonitrile 1.2 with melting point 208-211 C.
